Why crypto swap rates change
Why the amount you receive can differ from an earlier estimate, what a swap quote includes, and what to check before sending crypto.

The amount you receive can change because a crypto swap quote is calculated for a specific pair, amount, route, sending network, receiving network, and moment in time. The most useful number is not a general market price: it is the estimated amount to receive shown for your current exchange.
Before sending funds, confirm that the asset, network, amount, destination address, and expected payout still match what you intend to do. If any of them changed, request a fresh quote.
Market price, swap rate, and amount received
A market tracker such as CoinGecko shows a reference price based on market data. It does not promise that a specific amount can be exchanged at that price.
A swap quote is an executable route for your selected amount and networks. It can include a spread between buy and sell prices, route costs, and the effect of available volume. Coinbase explains the difference between a reference price, spread, and slippage.
For example, if a reference price is 1 BTC = 65,000 USDT, simple multiplication gives 650 USDT for 0.01 BTC. If the current route shows 646 USDT to receive, use 646 USDT when deciding whether to continue. The difference can reflect the executable price, route costs, available volume, and selected networks. These numbers are only an example, not current prices.
Six factors that change a crypto swap quote
- Market movement. Crypto prices can move while you enter an address or wait for a deposit to arrive. A faster move creates a larger difference between an earlier estimate and the price available when the exchange is processed.
- Route and spread. The service needs an available route from the asset you send to the asset you receive. Different routes can have different prices and operating costs, so the best available route can change.
- Amount and available volume. A larger exchange may use more of the volume available near the current price. This is often called price impact. Uniswap provides a concise price impact explanation: larger transactions and lower available liquidity can increase the effect.
- Sending and receiving networks. USDT on Ethereum, Tron, Solana, and BNB Smart Chain is the same token ticker on different networks. The route and payout can change with the network. Use the USDT network article before choosing one.
- Network load and confirmation time. The exchange usually starts after the deposit receives the required confirmations. If that takes longer, a floating quote has more time to move. See how long crypto swaps take.
- Quote conditions. Some routes require the exact deposit amount and a deposit within a stated time. Sending a different amount, using an old exchange address, or depositing after the stated period can change how the exchange is handled. Always follow the instructions shown for the current exchange.
Fixed and floating quotes
Exchange services generally use one of two rate models:
- Floating rate: the estimated payout can move with the market until the exchange is processed.
- Fixed rate: the service holds the quoted rate for a limited period, provided you send the exact amount and meet the displayed conditions.
This distinction does not mean every service offers a rate toggle for every pair. The terms shown for the selected route determine what applies. Changelly describes the practical difference in its fees and rates article.
What is included in the quote
The LightSwap widget shows the expected payout for the selected route. Review that amount immediately before you continue.
Your sending wallet may charge its own network cost to broadcast the deposit. That cost is normally taken from the wallet balance and is separate from the amount shown as the exchange payout. Make sure the wallet contains enough to send the intended deposit and cover that cost.
Do not assume that every part of a route is listed as a separate line item. The expected amount to receive is the clearest number for comparing the current result with what will reach your destination wallet.
A 30-second check before sending
- Confirm the exact asset and network on both sides.
- Check the amount you will send and the estimated amount you will receive.
- Make sure your wallet can cover the deposit and its sending cost.
- Check any minimum, maximum, time limit, or exact-amount instruction.
- Verify the destination address and add a memo or tag when the receiving service requires one.
- If you changed the amount, network, or address, start with a fresh quote.
What to do if you received less than expected
- Check whether the earlier number was a market reference, an estimate, or a fixed quote.
- Confirm the amount that actually left your wallet after its sending cost.
- Compare the selected networks and the exchange terms with the transaction you sent.
- Track the transaction by TXID to confirm when the deposit reached the correct network.
- If the difference is still unexplained, contact LightSwap support with the exchange ID, deposit TXID, asset and network, amount sent, expected payout, and amount received. Never send a seed phrase or private key.
Useful checks
| What you need to check | Resource | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| General market reference | CoinGecko | Compare the broad market direction, not a guaranteed exchange price. |
| Bitcoin network activity | mempool.space | Check recent blocks, the transaction queue, and estimated sending costs. |
| Ethereum network activity | Etherscan Gas Tracker | Check current Ethereum sending-cost estimates. |
These tools provide context. The current LightSwap quote remains the relevant number for the exact pair, amount, and networks you selected.
FAQ
Why did the amount change within a few minutes?
The market, available route, or network conditions changed, or the earlier quote expired. Refresh the quote and review the latest amount to receive before sending.
Is every difference a hidden charge?
No. A difference can come from comparing a reference market price with an executable quote, market movement, the exchange amount, or a separate wallet sending cost. Compare the exact deposit and payout values before drawing a conclusion.
Does a larger exchange always get a better rate?
No. A larger amount may qualify for a better route, but it can also have more price impact when less volume is available near the current price. Check the payout for the exact amount you intend to send.
Can a fixed quote still change?
It can fail to remain fixed if its conditions are not met, for example if the deposit arrives late or the amount differs from the instruction. Read the route terms before sending.
