How long does a crypto swap take?

How to identify the current swap stage, what causes delays, and when a transaction needs support.

There is no single guaranteed duration for every crypto swap. A swap can complete in minutes, but it can take longer when the deposit is waiting for blockchain confirmations, the route is being processed, or the payout network is busy.

The fastest way to understand a delay is to identify the current stage: Was the deposit broadcast? Is it confirmed? Has LightSwap started processing it? Was the payout sent?

The four stages of a crypto swap

  1. Deposit broadcast. Your wallet sends the deposit and creates a transaction ID, or TXID. If there is no TXID, the wallet probably has not broadcast the transfer yet.
  2. Deposit confirmations. The sending blockchain must include the transfer in a block. The route may require more than one confirmation before processing starts.
  3. Exchange processing. After the required deposit confirmations, the route exchanges the asset and prepares the payout. Market movement and route availability can also affect the swap rate.
  4. Payout confirmation. LightSwap or the route sends the receiving asset. The destination wallet may wait for its own blockchain confirmations before showing the final balance.

The status page is more useful than a generic timer because it shows which stage is currently waiting.

Why blockchain confirmations do not have a fixed time

Blockchains create blocks at different speeds, and individual transactions compete for space. Bitcoin targets an average block interval of about ten minutes, but an individual block can arrive sooner or later. The Bitcoin payment documentation also explains why services may wait for multiple confirmations.

For a Bitcoin deposit, paste the TXID into mempool.space. It shows whether the transaction is unconfirmed, which block contains it, and its current confirmation count. Its timing estimates are guidance, not a guarantee.

For other networks, use the explorer listed in the transaction tracking article.

Common reasons a swap takes longer

  • The wallet has not broadcast the deposit. No TXID means the transfer is still inside the sending wallet or service.
  • The deposit is unconfirmed. Network congestion or a low sending cost selected in the wallet can keep it waiting.
  • The amount is different from the instruction. Sending less, more, or splitting the deposit can require extra handling.
  • The asset or network does not match. A deposit on another network may not be detected automatically.
  • A required memo or tag is missing. The transfer may reach the platform but cannot be assigned to the exchange automatically.
  • The quote expired before the deposit arrived. The route may need recalculation or review.
  • The transfer needs manual review. The status should show that action or support is required.
  • The payout network is delayed. The exchange may be complete while the receiving transaction is still confirming.

Do not send a second deposit just because the first one is slow. That creates another transaction and can make the case harder to resolve.

What to check when a swap is delayed

  1. Open the LightSwap status page and note the current stage.
  2. Copy the deposit TXID from the sending wallet.
  3. Open the correct blockchain explorer and confirm the asset, network, amount, destination address, and confirmation count.
  4. Compare the deposit with the current exchange instructions.
  5. If a payout TXID is available, check it separately on the receiving network.

If the deposit is still unconfirmed, the sending wallet or its blockchain is the relevant place to check. If it is confirmed but the LightSwap status has not moved, the route may need more confirmations or support review.

When to contact support

Contact LightSwap support when the status says review or failed, a confirmed deposit is not reflected in the exchange status, the wrong amount or network was used, or the payout remains missing after a payout TXID was created.

Send the exchange ID, deposit TXID, asset, network, amount, and a short description of the problem. Never send a seed phrase, private key, or wallet password.

FAQ

Does a confirmed deposit mean the swap is finished?

No. It means the sending blockchain accepted the deposit. The exchange still needs to process the route and send the payout.

Why is my Bitcoin deposit still pending?

It may be waiting for a block because the Bitcoin network is busy or the wallet used a lower sending cost. Check the TXID on mempool.space and follow the options provided by the wallet that sent it.

Should I send the deposit again?

No. First track the existing TXID and check the LightSwap status. Send another deposit only if support or a new exchange instruction explicitly tells you to do so.
